Located just outside of Saskatoon, in the heart of the Canadian prairies, Black Fox Farm & Distillery is among the country’s most well-known and well-respected craft distilleries. Acres of fresh fruit, flowers, and grains are harvested and distilled into whisky, gin, and liqueurs that tell a story of terroir and commitment to excellence.

Fun Fact: The name was inspired by a black fox – a creature seldom seen but impossible to ignore – that took up residence one summer at the co-owner’s original grain farm. A symbol of cunning and craft, the black fox has, today, become synonymous with quality, character, and innovation.

Terroir

Once a concept reserved for the wine industry, terroir is fundamental to everything they do at Black Fox Farm & Distillery. Co-owners John Cote and Barb Stefanyshyn-Cote have long been advocates of the site and believe that its unique character, coupled with skillful distilling, contribute to the key qualities of Black Fox Farm & Distillery's spirits. "Some people don't believe in the importance of terroir when it comes to whisky," explains Stefanyshyn-Cote. "We do. SE Eleven celebrates our history and legacy with exceptional flavour. Everything we do at Black Fox is about creating a connection: to ourselves, to each other and to the world around us."

In the heart of the Canadian prairies, Saskatchewan is a landlocked province known for producing some of the world’s finest, heartiest grains. Temperature fluctuations here – with warm summers and northern winter winds – make it a rare environment in which to distill and age spirits. Black Fox rests their whiskies and select gins under prairie skies, yielding a boldness of flavour that is distinctive and unique for their brand.

Gin

Since the beginning, Black Fox has been synonymous with premium quality gin. Whether Oaked Gin, Gin #3, Haskap Gin or Cucumber Gin – they are all award-winning. The have already won different awards at Gin Masters, Artisan Distillers Canada, World Gin Awards and many more, but nevertheless Black Flox Farm & Distillery is constantly exploring new techniques and experimenting with ingredients to deliver even more flavourful gins that celebrate what nature is capable of.

Whisky

A few years ago, Black Fox has expanded its production to include a range of certified Canadian whiskies. SE Eleven compromises a single grain, a cask finish and a 2020 blend made from the best grain of the year. SE Eleven whiskies are among the few whiskies in the world that are matured outdoors. This gives them a unique, site-specific depth of flavour, as the casks expand and contract over the course of seasons depending on the weather.

Even before their official releases, the SE Eleven whiskies have received plenty of international recognition: in addition to Master and Gold medals at the World Whiskey Masters 2020 and Gold at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2020, they were awarded Gold at the Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition 2020.

The name SE Eleven was inspired by the legal property name of Black Fox Farm & Distillery (SE 11-36-06-W3) and emphasizes the distillery’s tradition of producing premium spirits from ingredients grown and distilled on its own land.
